| Abstract | This exploratory study investigated whether there are differences between males and females in the strategies used to construct mental representations from three-dimensional objects in a dimensional travel display. A Silicon Graphics IRIS computer was used to create the travel displays and mathematical models were created for each of the objects using computer graphics. These graphics were edited and transferred to videotape and a hypercard program was created to complement the orientation phase of the videotape. The subjects were asked to identify the correct object from the alternatives presented on the computer monitor as soon as the three-dimensional objects had passed through a two-dimensional plane described as "the detector field"; each subject was individually tested by an observer. The t-test procedure found in the Statistical Process System software package was used to compare the abilities of male and female subjects to identify the objects correctly at each of five levels of difficulty. Although other studies have found males to perform better than females on many tests of visual/spatial ability, a difference is not evident in this study. These conclusions are tentative, however, because of the size and unbalanced nature of the sample of 10 males and 31 females. The text is supplemented by four figures and one table.
